Zeynep Birced: BEATS PER UNIT —
5/4 — 8/5 2012
The exhibition traces various frames of reference to explore possible positions of making sense. The very essence of meaning is revealed through each display, whether in the form of letters of a sentence, pages of
a book, that tend to define a rhythm for meaning or in the form of metronomes, as an approximate way of specifying a tempo.
This notion is dismantled, suggesting that every beat is unique to its unit.
The artist’s instruments are units of measures, displaying methods of justifying and offering new ways of interpreting units and unities. Revolving around the notion of a mechanism in which the juxtaposed fragments emerge as a whole, the works reveal an uncanny sensation.
Birced employs the exhibition venue as a performative space where the works’ relations to one another communicate scapes of referential attributions.
The artist transcends material sense to rhythmic assemblies and constructs her works to interact with the audience where they generate the system of units to question the process as a means of unity.
